Agua de València

Agua de Valencia, a Spanish cocktail, is made from freshly squeezed orange, sparkling wine, vodka and gin. This fruity, refreshing cocktail is a cross between sangria and mimosa. It tastes like Spain in the spring sun. This cocktail recipe is perfect for sharing at your next party.

Mark Beahm is the photographer.

I asked my server to suggest local drinks and snacks on my first day of visiting Valencia. I thought that he was making fun of us when he suggested we try Agua Valenciana, or Valencian Water. Was it worth traveling to the east coast of Spain just to drink the water?

He walked over to the umbrella-shaded terrace table and brought a pitcher of saffron orange with a stack of carefully balanced glasses. We spent the afternoon drinking the drink and talking, while snacking on almonds, olives and fried calamari.

Aigua de Valencia is the lesser-known cousin of sangria. This is just as delicious, refreshing and easy to prepare for a large crowd as sangria. After one sip, I knew I had to share this cocktail recipe.

This lively Spanish drink will cool you down on a hot summer day.

What is Agua Valencia?

Agua de Valencia, a pitcher cocktail invented in the 1950s by the Cafe Madrid de Valencia. According to Maria Angeles Arazo the cocktail was created by Constante Gil, a bartender. He created the first Agua de Valencia in order to please the rowdy Basques who were visiting the bar.

Gil continued to serve the cocktail in the cafe. The cocktail was not popularized until the 1970s, when it became a symbol of Valencian nightlife. It soon spread throughout Spain.

Agua de Valencia is one of many Spanish batch cocktails that are typically served in pitchers. Gil was known for creating the ideal environment for Tertulia. This Spanish concept is centered on the conversation between friends and family lingering around the dinner table. I've found that pitcher cocktails and tapas always spark lively conversation around the table. Agua de Valencia goes well with a group of friends and some snacks like Antipasto Skewers or Pan Con Tomate.

Oranges are a great way to brighten up the winter. Agua de valencia is also perfect for warming up your winter party.

Ingredients for Agua de Valencia

Freshly squeezed orange juice is the key ingredient in Agua de Valencia. Valencia's oranges are world-famous. Valencians wouldn't approve of using generic orange juice bottled in this cocktail. You probably have vodka and gin in your home if you make cocktails occasionally. Grab a bottle of brut cava and a bag of oranges. If you prefer a sweeter beverage, try extra seco, or seco cava.

  • Orange Juice: The best juice is fresh, and Valencia oranges are the sweetest. In Spain, fresh orange juice is so common that you can order it by asking for zuro natural or "natural juice" and the juicer will juice the oranges according to your order. Try other oranges like blood orange or cara cara.
  • Cava brut: Cava, a Spanish sparkling white wine is made in a similar way to Champagne. Brut Cava is dry and the most popular Cava in Spain and internationally. I like to use the cava type to sweeten it instead of sugar. If you want a sweeter beverage, choose extra seco or Seco cava. (This means "dry" but is sweeter than brut in Spanish.
  • Vodka : Vodka has a subtle flavor and is very clear. It gives this drink a punch of alcohol without taking away from the taste of the orange.
  • Gin : London dry gin and/or dry gin are best for Agua de Valencia, since they're not sweetened. The botanicals also work well with the citrus.

How To Make Agua de Valencia

Agua de Valencia is an easy pitcher cocktail to prepare ahead of time. It only requires four ingredients, and you can quickly stir it in the pitcher. The flavors will blend together more as it sits in the fridge.

  • Juice oranges: Reserve one orange as a garnish. Divide the remaining six oranges in half and juice until you have 2 cups. It's easiest to use a citrus press, but a citrus reamer will work just as well. Pour the juice through the sieve to remove any pulp if you want a smooth drink.
  • Add the alcohol to the orange juice: Pour the fresh orange into a large pitcher along with 2 cups of cava, 1/2 ounce vodka and 1/2 ounce gin. Stir gently with a wooden teaspoon. Place the pitcher into the refrigerator for at least an hour.
  • Garnish the cocktail and serve it: Slice your reserved orange into thin round slices or zester strips. Pour the cocktail into six large wine glasses. Fill each glass with ice. Orange peel or slices can be used to garnish the cocktail. Cheers!

What to serve with Agua de Valencia

Agua de Valencia makes a great cocktail for parties. It is perfect to wash down finger foods like Crispy Fried Calabrian. Pan Con Tomate is a Spanish classic, consisting of garlicky fresh tomato spread on toasted crusty bread.

Agua de valencia is great to serve with simple Mediterranean appetizers like Easy Antipasto Skewers and 5-Minute Marinated Feta.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key principles of the Mediterranean diet's basic principles?

Mediterranean diet is a lifestyle choice that focuses on healthy and nutritious foods and regular physical activity. This diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts, and a moderate intake of dairy products, fish, meat, and poultry. Red wine should be enjoyed in moderation. The following are the main principles of the Mediterranean Diet:

  1. Eat mostly plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, beans, seeds, and yogurt.
  2. If possible, opt for fresh ingredients instead of pre-packaged processed food products.
  3. To enhance the flavor of your meals, add herbs to replace salt.
  4. Get active by adding some exercise to your daily schedule, such a walk after dinner, or taking up a class.
  5. Enjoy sharing meals and enjoying the company of friends and family.
  6. Practice mindful eating by paying attention to your food's flavors, textures, and smells. This will help to identify when you feel satisfied and full.

Is the Mediterranean diet predominantly plant-based

Yes, the Mediterranean Diet relies mainly on plants. Plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds are staples of this ancient diet. Red meat, poultry, and fish can also be found in smaller amounts due to their provenance around the Mediterranean Sea. If you choose to eat a vegetarian or vegan diet, these protein sources can be eliminated. Other dairy sources such as soy yogurt and tofu are great options for extra nutrition and proteins.

What are the Mediterranean fruits?

There are many fruits that can be found in the Mediterranean Diet, including apples, grapes (or melons), melons and figs as well as dates and berries. You can add fresh fruits into breakfast recipes like smoothie bowls, parfaits, or shakes to increase nutrition. Dates spread over toast with a dollop of Greek yogurt are also an excellent option for breakfast; it provides natural sweetness without the need for processed sugars. Fresh fruit can be sliced and served over salads to add flavor and nutrients and satisfy sweet tooth cravings. Other healthy snacks from the Mediterranean Diet may include nuts and seeds such as almonds and pistachios and dark chocolate in moderation for added antioxidants. Discover the diverse local foods that are considered to be staples in Mediterranean countries and enjoy the rich flavors of this ancient diet.
